Gender Studies (A.A.)
HEGIS: 5649
SUNY CODE: 2192
The Gender Studies program prepares students for employment and leadership in the business and professional world and engages them in the ongoing process of social and political change through a feminist perspective. This program provides a strong liberal foundation for baccalaureate study.
The goals of this program are to:
- present the basic concepts of the social and cultural constructions of gender that shape the experiences of women and men in society; topics including but not limited to politics, literature, media and music, health and the body, globalization, relationships, etc;
- introduce feminist perspectives across disciplines (historically, psychologically, culturally and globally); and
- present the differences between women and men based on race, ethnicity, social class, age, sexual preference, etc.
Successful graduates from this program will be able to:
- identify critical feminist theories that deconstruct the social and cultural influences shaping the experiences of women and men in society;
- analyze major contributions to the study of gender through a historical perspective with an emphasis on race, ethnicity, social class, age, sexual preference, etc; and
- create written and/or verbal documents that show how gender influences specific experiences of women and men in society.
