MA 125 Basic Concepts of Math I

This course is the first of a two-course sequence designed to introduce students to the basic structure of mathematics. Topics cover the structure of real numbers through a careful development of subsystems, to include the natural numbers,whole numbers, integers, rational numbers and decimals, together with operations on them. In addition, numeration systems including bases other than ten, problem solving and reasoning, elements of set theory, number theory, relations, functions, statistics and probability are discussed. This course also involves the use of a calculator. The sequence is appropriate for students preparing to teach at the elementary school level. Prerequisite: MA 095 or sufficient placement score.
