The goals of this program are to:

  1. Provide students with the knowledge and ability to explore natural phenomena, utilizing observation, hypothesis development, measurement and data collection, experimentation, evaluation of evidence and mathematical analysis.
  2. Actively engage students in the acquisition of basic skills commonly utilized in the health professions today.
  3. Enable students to discuss and critically analyze current issues in the health professions, demonstrating scientific literacy and knowledge of essential topics.
  4. Inform students of, and prepare students for, transfer opportunities in health professions, providing hands on experience when applicable.

Successful graduates from this program will be able to:

 

  1. Utilize the scientific method to develop hypotheses and perform experimental procedures, concluding with the preparation a formal laboratory report based on experimentation and scientific methods following the format used in scientific journals today.
  2. Successfully complete a variety of exercises demonstrating proficiency in various skills utilized in health professions.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of essential concepts in health professions; the ability to develop and/or evaluate arguments as they occur in this field; and the ability to utilize databases to locate valid scientific research in order to communicate verbally/in written form current updates in various areas of healthcare fields and how the information may affect their own lives/careers.
  4. Locate viable educational transfer opportunities that will meet their career goals.

1 For the Medical Pathway, MT/SS/Science Electives should be (in order of semester): SC153- General Chemistry I, SC154- General Chemistry II, SC225- Organic Chemistry I, SC156- Biological Science II.

2 For the Nursing Pathway, MT/SS/Science Electives taken should be: First and second semester: SS161- Introduction to Sociology and one of the following courses: MT115- Medical Terminology, SC113- Biology of Aging, SC117- Nutrition, SS253- Social Psychology, SS162- Social Problems or SS191- Cultural Anthropology. Second fall semester: SC125- Fundamentals of General, Organic and Biochemistry or SC153- General Chemistry I* or SC133- Physics I**, Second spring semester: SC255- Genetics or SC134- Physics II**

* SC153- General Chemistry I is recommended in the third semester only for students planning to transfer into the Respiratory Therapy program at SUNY Upstate Medical University.

**SC133- Physics I is recommended in the third semester and SC134- Physics II is recommended in the fourth semester only for students planning to transfer into the Radiation Therapy program at SUNY Upstate Medical University.

 

3 For the Physical Therapy Pathway, MT/SS/Science Electives should be (in order of semester): SC153- General Chemistry I, SC154- General Chemistry II, SC133- Physics I, SC134- Physics II.

 

4 MA124- Contemporary Math is recommended only for Pre-Nursing students. MA132 is recommended for students planning to transfer into Radiation Therapy at SUNY Upstate Medical University. IS115- Computer Applications I is recommended only for students planning to transfer into Medical Imaging Sciences at SUNY Upstate Medical University.

 

5 MA127- Mathematical Statistics I is recommended only for Pre-Nursing students. MA130 is recommended only for students on the Physical Therapy Pathway that did not test into a higher level math course. MA132 is required for students planning to transfer into Radiation Therapy at SUNY Upstate Medical University. MA141 is recommended for students planning to transfer into Radiation Therapy at SUNY Upstate Medical University.

 

6 For the Medical Pathway, SC155 is recommended. For the Nursing and Physical Therapy Pathways SC141 is recommended.

 

7 SC133- Physics I is recommended for students planning to transfer into Medical Imaging Sciences or Radiation Therapy (if not taken in a previous semester) at SUNY Upstate Medical University.

 

8 SC142- Fundamentals of Biology II is recommended for students planning to transfer to a Bachelors program with the intent to pursue a Physical Therapy Graduate degree at SUNY Upstate Medical University.

Total Credit Hours: 60-63
