EN 133 Major American Writers
A study of works by selected American authors. The goal is to understand the place these authors and their works hold in the canon of American literature. Authors may include Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, Virginia Woolf, Edgar Allan Poe, Emily Dickinson, Langston Hughes, Harper Lee, and Kate Chopin, among others. Emphasis is on the impact of historical and social events, as well as biographical influences, on the literature. In addition to focusing on the literary content of important American novels and short stories, this course will also analyze the historical context of those works. Over the past two hundred years, migration, war, slavery, industrialization, economic crisis, cultural upheavals, and our unique religious, ethnic, and ideological fabric have defined much of our nation's history. We will explore how events and issues influenced American writers, and how those writers, through their works, affected our view of the American experience. Contact Hours: (3,0)
